Jim O'Sullivan Chief U.S. Economist

Jim O'Sullivan is valued by traders and investors for successfully combining broad macro analysis with expertise in the data and events that set the tone for financial markets from week to week.

O'Sullivan is consistently the top-ranked forecaster on Bloomberg for non-farm payrolls, one of the most widely-watched U.S. economic indicators. According to MarketWatch, he is the "most accurate forecaster in America over the past 10 years." He has been the reigning MarketWatch Forecaster of the Year for the past six years, 2011 through 2016. He also won the honor in 2004, 2006 and 2008 -- that's nine of the 12 years since the award was created. Ranking is based on accuracy in projecting U.S. economic indicators, with virtually all Wall Street economists tracked. He has been MarketWatch Forecaster of the Month 17 times, most recently in February 2017.

O'Sullivan was named Reuters' U.S. Forecaster of the Year for 2014, 2015 and 2016. He has been co-ranked as top U.S. economic analyst three times in Institutional Investor's survey of U.S. fixed-income investors, and he has been ranked among the top three analysts five times.

Prior to joining High Frequency Economics, O'Sullivan served as Chief Economist at MF Global, where he built the firm's global economics department. He was Senior U.S. Economist at UBS from 2001 to 2009. O'Sullivan began his career at J.P. Morgan in 1985, where he authored the U.S. section of Global Data Watch, the firm's flagship publication. He is the editor and lead author of Data Decoder: An Investor's Guide to the U.S. Economy, a guidebook for tracking the U.S. economy, published in 2002.

O'Sullivan earned an M.A. in economics from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. He holds a B.A. in economics from Trinity College in Dublin, where he was named a Scholar of the University.
